Matt Leger: A few years ago, I bought my grandparents property in Eastern Ontario with the intention of building a homestead for me and my family. My grandparents lived on this property for almost 30 years and they did a lot of amazing things here. Now it's my turn to pick up the torch and, based on my research, permaculture was the perfect fit for the type of homesteading approach I wanted to take. Although my family and I are still learning (does that ever really stop?), significant progress was achieved in the short time that we've lived here. So far, we set up a raised bed veggie/herb garden made of reclaimed materials, a 3-stage compost bin also made of reclaimed materials, hugel mounds with wood chip pathway/swale, we do maple syrup every spring (a record season this year with just over 20 gallons!) and we recently planted fruit and nut trees. It goes without saying that this is all being done using "Whole Systems Design" in mind. Our mulch, for example, is primarily made of chipped forest debris mixed with leaves. It's all very enchanting to us and quite rewarding. That's what pushes us on to see what else we can do and there's always something new to learn.
